Marine engineering Degree:
Marine engineering is the discipline that deals with matters related to the design, innovation, construction and maintenance of seagoing vessels and navigation equipment. Marine engineers focus primary on the development and production of internal systems of boats, ships, or submarines. They are engaged in designing propulsion systems, auxiliary power machinery and operation equipment. Their technical responsibilities also include working on-board to maintain these systems.Marine engineering is closely related to other fields such as naval architecture, nautical sciences, oceanographic engineering, or automotive and mechanical engineering. These study areas require very good knowledge of physics, and more specifically fluid mechanics, propulsion, applied mathematics, control engineering, and computer-aided design (CAD).
Students of marine engineering have the opportunity to specialise in certain areas including hydrodynamics, naval operations, design and logistics, resources and aquaculture and technology management. A graduate of marine engineering possesses good knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, materials science and specialised computer software. Professionals work in many different settings and industries, from marine engineering firms and the naval forces, to offshore oil and gas industries and mineral extraction companies, and marine consultancy and survey agencies. Typical job roles include ship engineer, travelling service engineer, sales engineer, port engineer, consultant in maritime accidents, casualties and claims.
Marine Environmental Science Degree:
Marine Environmental Studies is for students who are interested in marine environmental science, management and policy. This degree is a fully integrated marine science course which incorporates all aspects of the marine system - physical, chemical, biological, and geological – with, in addition, management issues, such as management of the coastal zone, environmental policy, and sustainable development. The course covers the whole ocean system, but concentrates on the coastal and shelf seas, since these are the focus of socio-economic activity and are the most susceptible to climatic and human-induced change. It is suitable for students both with and without mainstream science backgrounds.
Maritime Business and Maritime Law Degree:
The BSc (Hons) Maritime Business and Maritime Law programme has been developed to support persons interested in gaining employment in the maritime services sector. It was estimated in 2012 that the UK employed 14,000 persons in the maritime services sector, which includes broking, insurance, P&I, maritime law, ship finance, ship operations and maritime publishing/events management. These activities contribute significantly to the UK balance of payments.
Maritime Business and Logistics Degree:
The BSc (Hons) Maritime Business and Logistics programme recognises changes taking place in the maritime business world in which, whilst the ship is still a critical part of the supply chain, other activities are also involved. Such activities include international logistics, port activity and intermodal operations. Work opportunities for logisticians are described as very good.
Maritime Transport and Logistics Degree:
The BSc (Hons) Maritime Transport and Logistics programme replaced a former Graduate Diploma in International Shipping and Logistics Management. Successful conclusion allows entry onto the Masters degrees in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and International Shipping. The Maritime Transport and Logistics programme is designed for students who have undertaken an appropriate Stage 5 qualification or have industrial experience linked to vocational qualifications. It is a course of one year’s duration and is taught alongside Stage 3 of the undergraduate courses in Maritime Business and Logistics.
International Supply Chain and Shipping Management Degree:
The BSc (Hons) International Supply Chain and Shipping Management programme is an additional top-up degree, which on successful conclusion allows entry onto the Masters degrees in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and International Shipping. This top-up programme includes subjects in the current Masters portfolio. It is appropriate for students who have undertaken a relevant Stage 5 qualification or have industrial experience linked to vocational qualifications. It is a course of one year’s duration and is partly taught alongside Stage 3 of the undergraduate course in Maritime Business and Logistics.
